The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, the only festival of its kind in the UK, is a not for profit arts festival, aiming to raise awareness of the transformational power of comics - and has just launched a GoFundMe specifically to support its expanding youth-focussed content.
The GoFundMe page sprang from a lovely offer from comics artist and 2019 Festival guests Michael Lark and partner Keli Wolfe, manager and director of events and programming at the Eisner Award-winning Zeus Comics in Dallas, Texas. They were blown away by the Festival and actually got engaged whilst in Kendal - and have decided to ask everyone who is offering them a wedding gift to donate to LICAF instead.
"Whilst the Festival's appeal to an existing UK and international fanbase is secure, in 2020 we're seeking to broaden the range of young people engaging with comics by offering a programme specifically developed by and for young people, explains Festival Manager Carole Tait. "At this year's Festival, we wish to extend the offering to include a greater range of workshops, films and youth-focussed events.
"We're hoping to raise these additional funds in the first quarter of 2020 to allow us to have the best possible programme in place for the festival in October. Any and every bit of support is massively appreciated by all our team."
GoFundMe is an American for-profit crowdfunding platform that allows people to raise money for events ranging from life events such as celebrations and graduations to challenging circumstances like accidents and illnesses. From 2010 to 2017, over $5 billion was raised on the platform from 50 million donors.
