Heads up folks - literally! There's some online comics fun ahead for all, of Luke "Sad Chewie" McGarry to take part in this weekend, in partnership with the Lakes International Comic Art Festival - way ahead of this year's massive virtual LICAF in October!
This Saturday – 18th July 2020, at 11.00am Pacific/ 7.00pm UK, Luke is launching a livestream live draw show, “Lukey Live in Lockdown”. Submit a photo to be live caricatures via lukemcgarry.com/submit and tune in!
The event will include a police sketch artist thing where Luke does a caricature based on the comment-section’s description of a user-submitted photo he can’t see!
Manchester-born, Los Angeles-based Luke McGarry is an illustrator, cartoonist, animator and designer many clients include Playboy, MAD, The Hollywood Reporter, Airbnb, Lyft, VIZ and Bloomberg Businessweek, and he’s done posters for Coachella, ZEDD, Tenacious D, Vans and The LA Galaxy.
He created the Star Wars-inspired internet phenomenon “Sad Chewie”, as well as a number of animations and music videos for the likes of Google, VISA, Geico, IFC, Vice TV, AXS, Epitaph Records and Universal Music Group.
His comic strip, Lukey McGarry’s TLDR, runs daily on GoComics.
Luke has received both Advertising Illustrator of the Year and the Silver T-Square award from the National Cartoonist Society, and a cease and desist letter from the city of Santa Monica; and is one half of design outfit Fantastic Heat Brothers, and he sings, plays bass and twiddles knobs in the band Pop Noir.
Adding another string to his bow, this year, rather than LICAF’s regular Comics Clock Tower at Kendal Town Hall, LICAF are running a new Virtual Comics Clock Tower showcasing exhibitors and their comic art creativity, designed by Luke and brother Joe!
Now online at licafclocktower.com, it’s a place to discover the work of inspiring independent creators and publishers. You can sample their work and then, if you like it, buy some comics, prints and other merchandise!
Lukey Live on Lockdown is another online presentation created in partnership with LICAF is our strange times. We have also recently joined the Tapas.io digital comics community, publishing free online versions of some of our many projects created since the Festival began in 2013, and the new comic, “Godzilla’s Lockdown Dairy” by Edward Taylor.
We are also supporting ace cartoonist Marc Jackson, who’s running Marc Makes Comics, a free online service offering cartoon art workshops and activities for families on YouTube.
